Gentleman
Jim
Gentleman Jim is Clarence
Roy Williams, my Pop. Jim was laid to rest in his
final resting place 20.10.03 at a grand 91 years
of age.
He was a highly respected bush man, a strong hard
working man, tough as an old mallee bull and just
as stubborn at times. He came to be known as Gentleman
Jim. His wife Evelyn was always beside him with
their family of nine children in rugged Outback
country, in remote areas of Australia where he worked
as a fencing contractor. He then took his position
on the Australian Dog Board to maintain and repair
his allocated 200 miles of dingo fence over long
red sand hills, across wide open clay pans in temperatures
that reached up to an unbearable 50 degrees . The
Dingo fence in Australia runs from the Cliffs of
the Great Australian Bite, 5500kms to a gate near
Jimbour in South East QLD. It was built to keep
wild dogs (dingoes) out of NSW away from sheep.
Pop was also a professional rabbit and roo shooter
and a soldier in Darwin in the 2nd World War. His
greatest hobby was the growing, maintaining, catching
and eating of the famous Australian Yabbie. (fresh
water crayfish). I spent every opportunity I could
with my pop and his family. These were some of the
most cherished parts of my young life...
Thanks Pop!

Gentleman Jim
Lyrics and Music by
Rod Esam
Old mate I’d like to thank
you for the good times on the land
My younger child hood memories, the biggest part
you played a hand
Teaching what you thought was right or wrong each
night around the fire
You had your kids, lost your love, in 90 years of
life.
Chorus:
Old man you’ve served your country well and sound
Men like you were hard to come by, when the chips
were down
Born in the land of Southern sun
Through war and depression times you’ve come
You have achieved much more than some people like
to say
To raise nine healthy children and send them on
their way
You’ve seen a lot of life old friend in the Outback
you call home
Your love for it burns deep in us where ever we
may roam.
Chorus:
Old man you’ve served your country well and sound
Men like you were hard to come by, when the chips
were down
Born in the land of Southern sun
Through war and depression times you’ve come
Your daughter is my mother and I have three children
of my own
We are proud, strong and thankfull, we are the seeds
you’ve sown
From the dingo fence to yabbie tanks you salted
on the plains
Even when you say goodbye in my heart you’ll still
remain.
Chorus:
Old man you’ve served your country well and sound
Men like you were hard to come by, when the chips
were down
Born in the land of Southern sun
Through war and depression times you’ve come
