In late 1987 I was working in the Simpson desert
on the Moonba Gas fields drilling for water with
my mate "Blacky". I had an accident and
fell off the rig to be then flown into Broken Hill
Base Hospital by the RFDS-The Royal Flying Doctor
Service. It was here I was nursed back to health
by Eveonne - my wife to be and she's been looking
after me ever since. Back Outback has won a TSA
songwriting award and enjoyed 6 weeks on the Top
30 Country Tracks Charts. It is a song about the
facets of the Outback that Eve and I love the most.
PS- For those of you who do not know what a Quandong
is it is a small red native fruit- which grows in
semi-arid areas. We love quandongs stewed for desert
with some ice cream or they are great in chutneys.

Back Outback Lyrics By Eve Esam, Music by Rod Esam I’m
heading back Outback with boots, dog and ute
Blue Jeans and guitar, no longer a suit
I’m Heading back Outback to the place I belong
To the red dust and salt bush and camp fires song
Back mustering cattle, chasing wild scrubber bulls
Driving trucks, big dozers and wild horses too
Chorus:
I’m heading back Outback where the swagman did roam
Where I camp in my swag and the stars are my home
To the tank on the plain far away from the sea
To eat yabbies, Quandong, damper and tea
She’s heading back Outback where the sand hills
roll high
Where fences are long to meet up with the sky
She’s heading back Outback where the Eagle fly’s
free
To sit in a creek bed and look up at the trees
Back to wildlife and flowers in wide open spaces
Toyotas, rodeos and warm friendly faces
She’s heading back Outback where the swagman did
roam
Where she camps in her swag and the stars are her
home
To the tank on the plain far away from the sea
To eat yabbies, Quandong, damper and tea
We’re heading back Outback to the place that we
met
Where the moon brightly shines as the sun quietly
sets
Where heading back Outback where our love first
began
She’s now my bride and I am her man
Back to good times when pressures were few
Now even the kids - they want to come too...
We’re heading back Outback where the swagman did
roam
Where we camp in our swag and the stars are our
home
To the tank on the plain far away from the sea
To eat yabbies, quandong, damper and tea
